The most daylight of the winter season

March brings more daylight than any earlier month in this comparison. Aurora chances shrink as the nights shorten

Northern lights hunting is still possible in March, since the sky is dark enough in the evening for most of the month. By the final third of March, though, the rapid gain in daylight means true darkness arrives later and lasts less time each night, which shortens the practical viewing window compared with December, January or February.

Travellers who want the northern lights as the main goal do better earlier in March, or in December, January or February, when nights are longer. Travellers who want family daylight activities with a realistic chance of aurora as a bonus, rather than the main goal, get a reasonable version of both in the first three weeks of March.

Easter Sunday and the last week of March

Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, and the days around it bring a clear demand peak in the last week of the month. Families travelling during a school Easter break should expect rooms, Santa Claus Village packages and tour slots to book up faster than an ordinary March week.

The first three weeks of March carry the same snow, similar daylight growth and the same Santa Claus Office hours without the Easter demand, which makes them a more flexible window for booking closer to the date.

Santa Claus Office hours change again on 1 April

The Santa Claus Office keeps its 09:00 to 18:00 hours through 31 March, the same schedule that has run since early January. From 1 April the office shortens to 10:00 to 17:00, part of its spring schedule. A trip planned for the very end of March or the first days of April should check which side of that change the visit falls on.

Santa Claus Village itself stays open every day of the year with free entry regardless of the office hours, and meeting Santa remains free with official photos sold separately in both schedules.

Booking order for a March trip

Book flights and the room first, and check whether the dates fall in the Easter week around 28 March 2027 before assuming normal availability. Add the Santa Claus Village visit and a husky or snowmobile day next, since the long daylight window makes timing far less strict than in the darker months.

Place one aurora attempt earlier in the month if the northern lights matter to the trip, with a spare night after it, and treat a late-March aurora sighting as a bonus rather than the plan. One timed activity a day is still enough for a family, even with the extra daylight to fill.
